Chatters,

See ya in chat beginning between 7:00 and 8:00 PM (Central) Saturdays.

Topics are open.

The new server is an IRC (Internet Relay Channel) chat. The chat is now registered and is available 24/7 for those that wish to use it. The IRC also allows for moderators, who are selected users that can control access and boot users should there be a need for such actions. Since the chat is now on an open chat server it is open to anyone to enter and occasionally we do get a lurker with their heart set on spreading Hate and Discontent, hence the moderator’s ability to boot and ban.

JAVA CHAT:

This is a rather basic chat that does not support many features but it does work rather well in that it is stable and we have not experienced any server boots like the old Yahoo was prone to. JAVA Chat does not support private messaging, cut and paste functions, file transfer, or HTTP links.
When you first log into the chat from the Metalshapers website or from one of the links posted you will be in the room under the JAVA CHAT format.
It is strongly suggested that if you are using a short name of 6 or fewer letters, you should add some numbers after your name. The chat will let you in but then change your name to Guest #xxxxxxxx after a short period of time if you do not. EXAMPLE: Rog is too short of name, but by adding numbers and letters the server will leave it alone, I.E.> Rog12345. IF the server should switch you to guest status you can change your NICK by typing /nick (name of your choice), where (name of your choice) is your desired nick. To register your nick with irchat.tv type the following into the message bar, /msg nickserv register password email@address.here.
I.E.> /msg nicksev register 123456 your@addresshere
Observe letter case and spacing. Passwords should be a minimum of 6 letters, numbers. If it refuses to register your password, just add a letter like your last initial or a number to it. Remember, this is your password and not your nick. When the chat opens you will be prompted for your password to identify your nick. When asked to IDENTIFY, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY yourpassword, being sure to observe letter case and spacing. http://www.irchat.tv/helpers.html This HELP page has more info on registration and how to find out if your name has been registered already.
Remember that you need to be in the chat room to make any of these changes. You can open the room any time prior to the Saturday chat and register your nick if you choose to.

MIRC CHAT:

For those members that wish to make full use of the chat room and IRC’s capabilities it will be necessary to download a Mirc Client. MIRC Chat does support private messaging, cut and paste functions, file transfer, or Http links as well as several other options.
MIRC programs are available for free from many sources but I just downloaded the one supplied by IRCHAT.TV and was amazed at how quick it installed and configured. Go to http://www.irchat.tv and download the MIRC to a temp file, then close all Windows applications and open the MIRC. It is an EXE file and will self install and configure itself, just follow the prompts. Once it is installed you will have an ICON on the desktop and in the Task Bar that will open the Chat automatically. I found it easiest to register my nick and password in the JAVA Chat before configuring the MIRC. Once you are registered it works the same in both MIRC and Java.
When the chat opens you will be prompted for your password to identify your nick. When asked to IDENTIFY, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY yourpassword, being sure to observe letter case and spacing. If you don’t get identified the server will just change you to a Guest and you can change back to your nick by typing /nick yournick, and then you will be asked to identify your password again. After you are identified you can close the NickServ window. You may see a GLOBAL window as well, it will contain security alerts and info from the server moderators, it can be closed as well. DO Not close the STATUS window however as this will disconnect you from chat.
Click on the little folder ICON at the top of the page and type Metalshapers into the channel, then click Join and you will be in the room. I recommend that you also check the “Pop up folder on connection” option, so the Channel folder will popup and you can select your room without the need of having to manually selecting it. To add rooms to your Channels folder click on the ADD button and the follow the prompts, inserting your room name and password where asked, then click OK. This ends configuration of the MIRC. Next time you enter just click on the desktop ICON, then IDENTIFY your password, then when the Channels Folder popup appears click on Metalshapers and JOIN.

Mac and Unix users:

If you are using a MAC or the Unix operating system go here for more information on IRC Clients for you system. http://www.irchelp.org

MP3 and Movie Sharing:

Some Mirc programs support these activities and have very active exchanges for those interested. If you opt to use one of these MIRC versions then the following information is needed to add Metalshapers to your Channels folder.
Channel: Metalshapers
Server: chat.irchat.tv
Port: 6667
http://oneota.net/~earthsourcepowr/IRC/chatpage.html This link gives a good pictorial tutorial on how to configure other MIRC versions to point to our chat. http://www.irchelp.org Also has more information on downloading that you may wish to review.

I know, at first this sounds complicated but it really is not. Ron downloaded the irchat.tv MIRC and configured it in less than 5 minutes. Once you have used it a bit the commands will become familiar and the stability is unbelievable. Ron and I have tested the room for hours on end and have not experienced a server boot yet.
Special thanks to Ron Brown for his contributions to this article.
See you in chat soon,
Roger VanHoozer
