Chopping a Top

By Kirk Crank
12/21/03

Here are some pics of the last chop I did. It's a "38" Ford 2 door sedan. Each chop is different but I start the same every time. Find the centerline, mark where to cut that you think will line up best and cut out the back light. Save all pieces for filler.  Measure 3-4 times prior to cuts. And if all else fails convertible sedans are cool!!! -- Kirk

04. --  Rear window removed and I am making 1st cut on "C" pillar.

05. -- A little later with front 1/2 tacked in place but shows support cage welded in to keep body from moving when top is removed.

06 -- Shows how top sprung right when cut.

08 -- I cut the top in half (front-rear) through the rear window. Front half was dropped straight down on the "B" pillar this left the front short also.

09 -- Rather than cutting the roof again and moving front half forward I laid the body half of the "A" pillar back 10 degrees and the roof half forward 10 degrees.

10 -- Shows how the the rear lines up w/"C" pillar aligned and one of rear window frame aligned.

Hmmm... maybe a convertible sedan would be best.

12 -- opted to align the "C" pillars and cut the window frame, move it forward, and make a filler panel. Here's pics of gap in window w/ pillars aligned, window frame cut out, and all pieces tacked in place.

13 -- Here's with top filler tacked, back tacked and rear window tacked after I took it back out and removed 1 more inch to make it smaller, looked better, then put in a filler panel later

19 -- Before chop

20 -- After chop
